The Middle East North Africa Writing Centers Alliance is an affiliate of IWCA, the International Writing Centers Association. I first joined MENAWCA in 2014, when I presented at the conference in Dubai.
I asked to join the Executive Board in 2016 when I moved back to Qatar, and then was elected president in March 2018. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the alliance to encourage the growth and sustainability of writing centers in the MENA region.
Achievements as President of MENAWCA
- Maintained membership numbers despite Arabian Gulf diplomatic crisis
- Revised constitution to form executive board working groups: Membership and Outreach, Conference and Research, and Media teams.
- Presided over the 6th biennial conference in Beirut, Lebanon in April 2019
- Established Outstanding Tutor Award for the MENA region

Workshop slides from MENAWCA 2019
Note: some slides are copied from a CCCC 2018 workshop I attended on sustainable WAC programs – their book Sustainable WAC: A Whole Systems Approach to Launching and Developing Writing Across the Curriculum Programs has been invaluable to me. I also reworked some of Mary Deane Sorcinelli’s handouts from her visit to our Center for Teaching and Learning.
